The present article tries to contribute to the debate around the dilemma faced by the federal institutions of higher education in Brazil, due to the ideological discourse about its inefficiency, which, associated to the fiscal crisis, serves as a justification for the systematic reduction of the resources for its funding, putting at stake its  public identity.  For this purpose, a direct survey of the student/year cost was carried out in the undergraduate courses at the School of Administration, Economy and Accounting of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT), in the academic year 2005, so as to identify up to what point one can state that the management of public higher education is efficient or not. The results obtained have been succinctly contrasted with others traditionally used in the literature and by the Ministry of the Education and the National Audit Office of the Union. The hypothesis considered is that the values obtained from the financial data of the higher education institutions tend to overestimate the cost per student as they incorporate a series of expenses that are not directly related to the undergraduate education process.
