This article presents a survey and an analysis of the educational legislation, enacted at the federal level, regarding the assessment of learning. Covering the period from 1930 to the current legislation, it highlights the key guidelines and standards in the texts analyzed, in order to explain the concepts underlying them. In general, it becomes clear that until 1961 evaluation's ranking purpose prevailed and, since 1971, the role of feedback was added prescribing goals that enhance evaluation's educational potential.
