This article aims at sharing the hardships of an evaluation proposal of the impact of an educational program, the present object of the author‘s analysis. This study, provisionally named "Evaluation of possible impacts of teacher education programs: the experience of the Letra e Vida Program", arose from a concern with the lack of studies that attempted to measure impacts of educational programs in Brazil. 1he text discusses the concept of "impact evaluation" and analyzes the methodological difficulties inherent to this type of evaluation. It als o provides examples of challenges underlying the measurement of impact in education which frustrated the author's initial doctoral project, and the attempts made to try to overcome such obstacles. The motivation for this article, then, is not to share research results, but to propose the discussion of the difficulties encountered and of the methodological approaches that can be used to study the effects of the programs, so as to widen the reflections on this topic.
