Abstract

This text is the result of a study that examined specific characteristics of the family background that contribute to the fact that students attending public schools have a quite varied educational performance, as well as the impact of household characteristics on schools. The theoretical framework is the literature on school effects, school effectiveness, and also the family-school relationship. The data come from a survey of the longitudinal panel type, with 1194 students from seven elementary schools in Belo Horizonte. Students were tested in Language and Mathematics on three occasions and answered questionnaires. Parents of 38 students, selected according to their children's performance in the tests, were interviewed, as well as some professionals at the schools. The quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed with an integrated computational tool. The results showed that family attitudes contribute to educational stratification, but schools do not merely reproduce family inputs. Some more prestigious schools recognize that they were chosen and strive to maintain the reputation earned by making sure students attain good results.
