This article focuses on the experience of institutional self-evaluation at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), specifically the performance of the School of Administration (EAUFBA) based on the National System of Higher Education Assessment (SINAES) so as to enable reflection on the effectiveness of assessment practice adopted at EAUFBA and its contribution to the processes of decision making and management improvement. For that purpose we use document analysis and draw on interviews with experts in the field of evaluation and management. The study reveals that the practice of institutional self-evaluation at UFBA takes place in an asystematic and discontinuous way, due to technical, financial, and political difficulties, among others, having primarily the purpose of complying with regulation. It also notes that EAUFBA did not carry out its evaluation according to the SINAES model, having adopted strategic planning as a tool for self-knowledge. Thus, it shows the correlation between planning and evaluation practice as important tools for management. It is hoped that the reflections put forward will contribute to understanding the importance of evaluation at institutions with a view to promoting self knowledge, overcoming regulatory functions envisaged in the legislation.
