With the institution of Prova Brasil (Brazil Test) in 2005, municipalities now have specific data of their educational systems in the context of national externaI assessment. Considering that the results of the Prova Brasil are used to calculate the Index of Basic Education Development (Ideb), this paper makes a comparative analysis of the results obtained by Aracaju's municipal schools in the Prova Brasil and in the Ideb in 2005 and 2007. 1he study concludes that the absence of externaI evaluation may lead school systems to misinterpret the improvement in the quality of education, if they rely only on the increasing rates of approval.
