This article presents an analysis of the written production by students from the state of Paraná who took part in the PISA/2006 assessment of the resolution related to one of the Mathematics questions involving Arithmetic. This was carried out based on assessment as an investigation practice and on the guidelines for Content Analysis. By examining the strategies and procedures used and how students dealt with the techniques of arithmetic operations, we tried to identify evidence of arithmetical thought and aspects of horizontal mathematization present in their written registers.
