This paper presents and discusses the results of a survey of articles published in Estudos em Avaliação Educacional (Studies in Educational Evaluation), by the Carlos Chagas Foundation, between 1999 and 2009, in order to understand how often and in which ways the concept of formative assessment has been discussed in the scientific literature. Using "assessment of learning" for the query, 33 articles were selected for full reading, and of these, 20 dealt with formative assessment. An analysis of these 20 articles showed that 5 of them assume a clear definition of the term and 15 only mention characteristics of what is being understood by formative assessment. We have tried to problematize the results in light of ideas about formative assessment, highlighting the need for a deep reflection on the concept, in face of its diversity and complexity.
