This article presents the main discussions and results of a project developed between 2006 and 2008 about institutional assessment in public schools. Using a longitudinal evaluation mechanism, built specifically for the purpose of this project, our study demonstrates how it is possible to use this resource to acquire a broader knowledge of educational and school problems and how it enhances their solution. The text also discusses the Learning Index (ICA), which is a useful indicator to gauge the development of student learning. The use of this indicator coupled with measures of context may help to gain an even deeper understanding of the causes of student problems.
