This article describes the Bookmark Method utilized in the interpretation of proficiency scales through the creation of Performance Levels. The present paper shows the utility of this method, producing a pedagogic interpretation of the Mathematics scale of the students assessed by the longitudinal study, Projeto Geres/2005 - Estudo Longitudinal da Geração Escolar 2005. The first stage of the method consists of the allocation of each item used in the test to a specific point in the scale used for the attribution of students’ scores. After all of the items are ordered according to their position in the scale, certain items are identified, through a substantive analysis, which define the cut scores between the performance levels. This procedure uses referenced levels with terms that have pedagogic meaning and not just numeric values, it makes viable the production of an interpretation which is potentially clearer of the scale of measurement, and thereby more accessible to the school community and to the parents of students.
