This article describes the methodology used in the construction of the Functional Literacy Indicator (Inaf) based on proficiency scales. It also shows relevant results concerning some of the subjects’ characteristics that influence their literacy abilities. First, the paper describes the main concepts developed for the creation of the indicator, as well as improvements made along the decade. The second part presents an evaluation of the measuring instruments used to obtain the proficiency scores and the subsequent construction of the Inaf as well as an analysis of the sample characteristics across the seven different years. Finally, the authors present results of some analyses performed to indicate and quantify the effects of some of the subjects’ attributes which are directly associated with their performance results, as well as a correspondence analysis, used to identify attributes associated with certain defined performance groups.
