In distance education, evaluation must face other challenges, beyond those normally encountered in the teaching-learning process, due to the peculiar characteristics of this category of education. The present project compares the evaluation tools used in distance education to the ones employed in face-to-face education. The methodology adopted consisted of disseminating a survey using social networks and personal contact. The work started with a brief review of the existing literature on educational evaluation, distance education and also evaluation in distance education. It was observed that some of the instruments used in distance education are innovative, though the presence of traditional instruments still plays an important role. Most participants of this survey believed that evaluation in Distance Education contributes to meaningful learning by students. Besides, they understood that the compulsory face-to-face assessment required by the Brazilian law helps to give greater credibility to the course.
