The goal of this article is to analyze the characteristics of evaluation initiatives that have been implementes in municipal education in the state of São Paulo. We present information of fourteen municipalities which were collected through interviews with professionals from the Departments of Education and documents produced by the schools concerning their evaluation systems. We seek to identify possible uses of the evaluation results for the formulation and implementation of municipal educational policies and possible relationships or articulations with assessments conducted by the federal government. It has been shown that there is a tendency for adopting assessment procedures along the lines followed by the federal government. We have also identified the use of the Index of Basic Education Development as a factor inducing greater attention to the results of student performance.
