Studies indicate that the journal Estudos em Avaliação Educacional, edited by the Carlos Chagas Foundation, and the journal Ensaio: Avaliação e Políticas Públicas em Educação, edited by the Cesgranrio Foundation, are, in Brazil, fundamental references in disseminating the production of knowledge in the specific area of basic education evaluation. The present study aims to map the scientific studies published in the journal Estudos em avaliação Educacional during the period since its inception in 1990 until 2010, ie, 20 years of its existence. Concerning studies of the so-called state of the art, the journal joins the efforts made by Brazilian researchers to understand the development of scientific knowledge concerning educational assessment. In addition to mapping the scientific production, we draw the profile of the journal, pointing out that it moves away from political-ideological discussions of assessment.
