Abstract

The study whose object is the continuing education program named Letra e Vida, offered by the São Paulo State Department of Education to literacy teachers between 2003 and 2006, evaluated the impact of the Program on the results of student performance in grade 1 of elementary school in 2007, which was measured by means of the State of São Paulo System of Evaluation of Educational Achievement. It was also based on the concepts and practices of the participating literacy teachers. We used a mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Statistical analyses of the original study contemplated the triangulation of the results of multiple linear regression analyses, the comparison of the results of students in schools with a different proportion of teachers who participated in the course, and of studies based on decision trees.
