This article discusses the repercussions and tensions generated by external assessments of public schools in the Baixada Fluminense - RJ. The study focuses on the issue of access, analysis and understanding of the results of the Índice de Desenvolvimento da Educação (Education Development Index), as well as the impact on the systems and schools. A preliminary analysis based on interviews points to the identification of impacts on school organization and teacher pedagogical work with neotechnicist, managerial and regulatory characteristics, which causes concern. In spite of our critical analysis, external assessment can also be seen as possibilities rooted in the concept of negotiated quality.
