Abstract

SERPA, Alexandre Luiz de Oliveira  and  PONTES, Luís Antônio Fajardo. Bullying escolar e sua percepção pelos alunos: um estudo do Saresp. Est. Aval. Educ. [online]. 2013, vol.24, n.54, pp.118-141. ISSN 0103-6831.

Violence in its various forms is an endemic problem in Brazil. This reality is not different in schools, where bullying is one of the practices that have attracted most attention in recent years. This paper describes and analyses the frequency and the intensity of bullying practices in basic education schools in the State of São Paulo, and explores, through logistic regression modeling, the association between bullying and pupil academic performance and contextual characteristics. The data used in this study have been collected from the student background questionnaire and from the Portuguese and Mathematics tests of the 2009 edition of the São Paulo State System of Performance Evaluation. The conclusions reveal the existence of a considerable number of intense bullying victims in the State of São Paulo and identify a set of student characteristics strongly associated with a greater vulnerability to these practices.
