Studies about assessment have acknowledged the necessity of changing and improving the methods of assessing pupils’ learning in line with the challenges which have come to be placed on educational systems, namely, to promoting successful schooling for all. This article refers to these ideas and focuses on the problem of learning assessment. The main objective of this article is to give an account of the procedures involved in the assessment of student learning which have been followed by teachers in two Portuguese schools with very different results in National Exams. It also intends to characterize these methods of assessment, and discover and interpret the reasons and beliefs which support the option for these practices. The data collected suggest the existence of a conflict between the procedures of assessment proposed in the schools’ internal curriculum management documents, and those effectively used by the teachers; also that beliefs in a “testinitis” vicious circle in the process of the assessment of learning are reinforced.
