Abstract

PEDRO, Ana Paula  and  PIRES, Lucília. Tolerance versus discrimination by portuguese college students. Est. Aval. Educ. [online]. 2013, vol.24, n.56, pp.186-219. ISSN 0103-6831.

The research we developed focused on the social representations of the values of university students in Portugal. To investigate the issue of tolerance vs. discrimination, especially the trait of blatant discrimination, we presented students with a list of individuals belonging to minority groups who, by various characteristics, might be the target of intolerance and social ostracism, and asked which of these individuals the college students did not want as neighbors. Additionally, we inquired what social behaviors and attitudes the youths considered objectionable or acceptable. We also sought to measure the perceptions of students as to the acceptance or rejection of such behaviors by society. We then compared the data with those collected by the European Values Survey (2008) regarding a representative sample of the Portuguese population and sought to capture differences and similarities.

Keywords : Moral Values; Social Behavior; Social Representations; College Students.
