In order to comprehend how students write by the end of basic education, in this research we have analyzed short essays in an entrance examination in light of the social-historical framework, especially Bakhtin’s postulates as well as text linguistics’ principles. The corpus comprised a sample consisting of 374 short essays produced during the Fuvest-2007 entrance examination, and was analyzed under the criteria of the educated standard, expressiveness, organizational configuration, and extratextual referencing. The results reveal interlocution-related difficulties: language torn between a know-how-to-say and a must-say, which serve as basis for initiatives meant to reorient written language teaching and teacher education.
