This paper presents a literature review on teacher evaluation, highlighting the different objectives, criteria, and tools that can be used in elaborating new proposals. The available alternatives will oftentimes reflect diverging conceptions, which may result in conflicts during the decision-making process. Despite that, there is considerable consensus as to the necessity for such process to be as participative as possible, the teachers’ involvement being paramount. Another consensus found in the bibliography refers to the superiority of ideas that make use of more than one evaluation tool, allowing for a more thorough analysis of the teachers’ work.
