Abstract

This paper analyzes eight focal groups, comprising 27 school managers and 36 teachers from public schools of the Rio de Janeiro state municipalities of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias. The objective is to know how elementary school professionals perceive the influences of external evaluations on the school curriculum. Besides taking part in the Prova Brasil nationwide test, both municipalities have implemented their own assessment system. Rio de Janeiro offers a bonus payment to professionals whose school meets the goals set by the local prefecture, whereas Duque de Caxias does not promote high impact policies. We approach the current discussion on external evaluations as well as the one on the curriculum in such context. Lastly, we discuss the approaches that suggest that those evaluations have been restricting teachers and narrowing the curriculum.
