This article analyzed the selfassessment process in a federal educational institute through the lens of knowledge management and institutional theory. The research was characterized methodologically as a qualitative case study. Data was collected through interviews, participant observation and documental research. Data analysis followed the procedures of content analysis and the triangulation technique. The results identified the self-assessment evaluation process as a mechanism of institutional legitimation, with incidence of mimetic and coercive isomorphic mechanisms. The association between the lenses of knowledge management and institutional theory provided a more robust understanding of the self-assessment process, identifying limitations and potentialities.
