This article aims to understand the meanings attributed by a teacher and her students to the use of image-based assessment records (photographic portfolios, models, drawings, posters, comics) in physical education classes during eight years of schooling. This qualitative study uses as its sources the narratives of a teacher and 28 students from the 9th grade. The results indicate that the use of these records enhances: a) self-assessment; b) student empowerment; c) the interpretation of the meanings attributed to learning in physical education; and d) the recollection of the teaching-learning process. The article concludes that image-based assessment strengthens dialogue, research and reflection between students and their teachers, revealing different ways of learning.
