The present study aimed to analyze school dropout by identifying the Differential Functioning of Items in the context of face-to-face instruction in public and private community institutions of higher education, using the WWH-dropout scale instrument. The psychometric properties of the items were assessed using Item Response Theory, and the study of bias was conducted using the logistic regression method comparing public and private institutions. Item bias analysis identified two items with differential functioning. The repositioning of these items on the scale revealed that student performance has greater influence on dropouts at private institutions than at public ones, and contributes to the early and differentiated performance of educational institutions in preventing dropouts.
