Abstract

BARBOSA, PÂMELA WEBER; TEIXEIRA, GIBRAN DA SILVA; HALMENSCHLAGER, VINÍCIUS  and  TILLMANN, EDUARDO ANDRÉ. SECOND CHOICE IN SISU AND DROPOUT RATE: AN ANALYSIS FOR FURG. Est. Aval. Educ. [online]. 2024, vol.35, e09186.  Epub Feb 15, 2024. ISSN 1984-932X.  https://doi.org/10.18222/eae.v35.9186.

Dropout rates have been one of the main problems faced by Federal Institutions of Higher Education in Brazil. One of the issues under discussion is whether the Sistema de Seleção Unificada [Unified Selection System] (SiSU) may have influenced the increase in student dropout, especially for those who were admitted in their second course choice. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate whether second course choice admissions affect dropout rates, based on data from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG). For this purpose, information from FURG academic system and SiSU reports was used, and the Propensity Score Matching method was applied. The results indicate that second-choice students are, on average between 2.51 and 2,86 p.p. more likely to drop out than first-choice students.
