The author of this article uses the metaphor of sisterhood to analyze how feminine political beings are created from a historical perspective. Stressing the last thirty years, Fox-Genovese compares the concepts of sisterhood and feminism and discusses how both deal with the universalness and specificity of women's struggles, particularly in the United States middle class.
