The author of this article uses the metaphor of sisterhood to analyze how feminine political beings are created from a historical perspective. Stressing the last thirty years, Fox-Genovese compares the concepts of sisterhood and feminism and discusses how both deal with the universalness and specificity of women's struggles, particularly in the United States middle class. Her reflection questions the weight of individualism in contemporary feminism.
