This article focuses on the political debate and decision-making process pertaining to the abortion issue In the Brazilian Congress attempting to Identity the presence of the Executive Branch and In particular the pressure exerted by political and social groups in this process The article analyzes the debate on the issue from the moment rt first emerged in the legislature beginning in 1946 until the present highlighting the more recent discussion The study examines documents from the House of Representatives and National Senate particularly bills on abortion Finally the author points out that with regard to this issue the interests of the Catholic Church segments of the medical profession the feminist movement and Evangelical churches are reflected in the National Congress by order of entry into the discussion.
