Within a context of sweeping social transformations at both the social and organizationa Ileveis in the structure of militar' institutions as well as the models for the social participation of women, the Armed Forces of the Western Nations began to admit women from the early 1970s onwards, reflecting a breakaway from historical precedents. This articlefocuseson one of the many analytIcal dimensions prompted bythis issue: relationshipsbetween the family and the military as a profession. it shows that the potential for conflict between two highly demanding institutions affects women in the mil itary In a very particular manner. Having analyzed this problem on the basis of studies carried out in a number of countries, it then focuses on data obtained in 1994 from questionnalres completed by ali women of the Portuguese Armed Forces
