Abstract

ONETTO, Fernanda Maria Chacon. Towards a Reconceptualization of Street Harassment. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2019, vol.27, n.3, e57206.  Epub Sep 01, 2019. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2019v27n357206.

This paper examines different conceptualizations about street harassment in two theoretical frameworks, the feminist and hate crimes literature, which present critical nodes that hinder the understanding of the phenomenon. These critical nodes are identified, exposed and reviewed. Despite these nodes, the convergence of both theoretical frameworks enriches its explanatory capacity on the phenomenon of street harassment. This article proposes a reconceptualization of street harassment based on the combination of the two aforementioned theoretical bodies. This article contributes to the debate about street harassment, and, in a broader sense, about violence, locating the theory of intersectionality at the center of the analysis.

Keywords : Street harassment; Interseccionality; “Doing difference”; Gender; Hate crime.
