Abstract

MATHIAS, Dionei. Immigration and Resistance. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2020, vol.28, n.1, e56007.  Epub Jan 01, 2020. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2020v28n156007.

This article aims to analyse the representation of female characters in the context of German language immigration literature. With focus on resistance, this article discusses the intersection of gender and immigration in the short story “Schatten und Schritte” written by Aysel Özakin and the novel All Russians Love Birch Trees by Olga Grjasnowa. The first text, published in 1985, presents a voice of the first wave of the history of migratory flows to Germany, the second one, published in 2012, develops a discussion about female perceptions and resistance practices after the turn of the millennium. Resistance is understood in this context as a process of recognizing, naming and repressing acts which produce inequalities. The first text connects resistance to a feeling of guilt, the second focusses, above all, on the autonomy obtained through acts of resistance.

Keywords : Resistance; Schatten und Schritte; Aysel Özakin; Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt; Olga Grjasnowa.
