Abstract

GOMEZ MONTERO, Eva-Luisa. Joe Goldberg: The archetype of the male pragmatics of control and the Romantic myth. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.2, e76531.  Epub May 01, 2022. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2022v30n276531.

The aim of this article is to manifest the different forms of normalization and hierarchization of masculinity, through the analysis of the discourse and the representation of the first season of You. The structural analysis in relation to narratological and semiotic aspects helps to understand the construction of the story and the character, and the content analysis glimpses how new masculinities are constructed from the myth of romantic love and the male pragmatics of control using narrative, aesthetic, and symbolic resources. Joe Goldberg is a male who exercises violence and control over women. Despite being represented as a psychopath, he uses strategies from the myth of romantic love that justify the violence and control exerted against women, becoming a new macho archetype.

Keywords : Gender studies; Masculinities; Romantic myth; male pragmatics of control; Joe Goldberg.
