Abstract

BARBOSA, Karina Gomes. Girlhood and Greta Thunberg's image on the cover of Time magazine. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.2, e76367.  Epub May 01, 2022. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2022v30n276367.

I reflect on how certain contemporary representations enunciate the concept of girl. The objective is to turn feminist communication studies to a subject marginalized in feminisms, but considered crucial for human development, and to understand how these discourses build visibility regimes about girls. For this, I resort to a critical cultural analysis, combining the materiality of the image of environmental activist Greta Thunberg on the cover of Time magazine (May 2019) with the power relations that surround and/or involve her, with the analytical support of a digital flânerie of the activist’s networks. The theoretical framework is anchored in girlhood studies and feminist studies. Greta’s image seems to speak of the inconstancy of the girl’s epistemology, marked by fissures and traumas in representation, as well as the absence of other bodies, other girls, to enunciate it.

Keywords : Girls; Greta Thunberg; Media; Image; Representation.
