Resumen

BIELLI, Andrea; BACCI, Pilar; BRUNO, Gabriela  y  CALISTO, Nancy. Changing to keep everything the same: women and psychotropic drugs in Uruguay. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.1, e93197.  Epub 21-Mar-2023. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2023v31n193197.

In this article we propose to review once again the link between women and psychotropic drugs based on three qualitative investigations conducted in Uruguay from 2013 to 2019 that have addressed the prescription and consumption of benzodiazepine and antidepressant psychotropic drugs in Montevideo. We will attempt to answer what causes women to be identified as the typical patients in health services and why women direct there their experiences of psychic pain and assume the proposed psychopharmacological treatments. The results presented here show how, despite the visibility of this problem, roles, gender-related expectations and adverse socio-economic circumstances lead to the persistence of the naturalization of psychotropic drug use among women.
