Abstract

SANCHEZ, Beatriz Rodrigues. Between the streets and the parliament: the legalization of abortion in Brazil and Argentina. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.2, e92882.  Epub July 30, 2023. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2023v31n292882.

How do feminist movements influence the approval of legislative proposals? To answer this question, I present the case studies on the legalization of abortion in Brazil and Argentina, based on bibliographic review, analysis of documents and articles from newspapers and magazines. The comparison between the two countries allowed to raise four main explanations to why, despite the similarities regarding institutional designs and activism trajectories, this historic demand of feminist movements was institutionalized only in Argentina.

Keywords : Feminist movements; State feminism; Political representation; Legalization of abortion.
