Large scale evaluations often require alternative forms of the same test or tests of variable difficulty. In the first case, the forms are designed at the same level of difficulty but vary for unpredictable reasons. In the second, different forms are designed to vary in content and difficulty, often by a considerable degree. In these circunstances, use of a method to establish the comparatibility of results on multiple test forms becomes essential. Recent advances in psychometrics facilitate the task of placing all results on the same scale, taking advantage of item parameter invariance properties obtained through the use of item response models.
