Recent contributions from the area of social studies of science and technology have placed emphasis on the concept of technology as being an autonomous body of knowledge, which searches for a better understanding of its own specifications and for the typical characteristics of such kind of knowledge. In this paper; starting from this characterization, we present and discuss the elements used to form the concept of knowledge content relative to engineering, as to say of the cognitive dimension of engineering. In addition, we approach the engineering activities such as design, production and operation of artifacts, from where this knowledge comes, highlighting the design. At last, we analyse possible implications of these concepts on the teaching of engineering.
