Resumo

The article makes a comparative analysis between the undergraduate courses from the Applied Social Sciences Center, from the Exact Sciences Center, and from the Health Sciences Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and undergraduate courses from similar centers of other federal undergraduate teaching institutions in the Brazilian Northeastern region (lFES). For that, it applies the following indicators: enrolled student/professor relation in each course center, courses duration, number of graduated students in each course and center and number of vacancies in the admission exam (vestibular) in each course and center. The article concludes that, in a general sense, the undergraduate courses from the Applied Social Sciences Center, from the Exact Sciences Center, and from the Health Sciences Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte present unsatisfactory performance in comparison with identical courses offered by other federal universities in the Brazilian Northeastern region, what brings to the UFRN the urgent necessity of reexamining the performance of its undergraduate courses so that, in the medium run, significant improvements of its operational efficiency may occur. And that is even more imperative when one knows that the budgetary resources allocation model IFES, adopted by the Education Ministry, and resulting from the proposal of federal undergraduate teaching institutions, is strongly based upon productivity indicators.
