The paper presents the general features of the Programa de Aceleração de Aprendizagem (Accelerated Learning Program) and analyses the costs and effectiveness of three projects implemented in the state systems of Maranhão and Minas Gerais as well as in 15 municipal systems. Graduates from the program were submitted to a SAEB - calibrated test for the fourth grade. Results confirm the program hypotheses according to which its graduations should perform at the same level as regular graduates from the 4th grade in their respective states. As the result of the intervention, students formally treated as multi-repeaters were able to skip 1,6, 2 and 2,8 school years in the different projects. Cost analysis reveals that with an average cost inferior to R$ 200 per year the program generates savings ranging from 400 to 800%, depending upon the circumstances under which it is implemented. The cost analysis also suggests that when investments are insufficient, as in the case of Maranhão, results tend to be more modest.
