DEMO, Pedro. Promoção automática e capitulação da escola. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 1998, vol.06, n.19, pp.159-190. ISSN 0104-4036.

The text discusses the risks of the actual and official tendency to introduce in the basic school the continuous promotion, in order to avoid by all means student's failure. The visible good intention in the background is easily dismantled by the temptation to promote the students without the necessary apprenticeship. The appeal for the argument to preserve the self-esteem of the student emerges often. We try to argument in favor of the apprenticeship, since the student has the right to learn. He has to be promoted, because he learns adequately. Becoming the promotion something automatic, it hides the lock of apprenticeship, what contributes to a still more rapid and fatal pressure to recognize the public school as "something poor for the poor". Besides it is not the best way to cultivate self-esteem by means of hiding real problems. The pedagogy of truth is always preferable. The truth of the student is its well done apprenticeship.
