Educational evaluation and the quality of education are two central issues in the current pedagogical debate, both raising a wide interest. Even if the members of the educational community (teachers, parents, administrators) have payed a lot of attention to both issues, we are far from reaching a general agreement about the core questions of what should be considered an education of good quality and how evaluation could contribute to improve it. Being really difficult to give a definite answer to those questions and so adopting a humble attitude, this paper aims at clarifying the existing connection between quality and evaluation in education. With this objective in mind, it raises issues and identifies problems as the best mean to further advance in the analytical exercise. But at the same time it wants to make some positive contribution, so proposing some ways - even provisional and subjected to further discusion - for answering those questions. The final aim of this reflection is not but to contribute to the improvement of schools and educational activities. Being this one an slippery and unstable field, the only reason for this exercise is to openly contribute to the improvement of institutions subjected to evaluation.
