Resumen

This study reports results of lay teachers in the special entrance examination accomplished by the Federal University of Roraima, in June of 1998. The presented analyses were carried out on the results of Portuguese and Mathematics tests which compose the entrance examination. In a general way, the averages of correct answers obtained by competitive candidates were low in Portuguese and Mathematics. The classified candidates' averages were significantly higher in the four undergraduates courses (Pedagogy, Mathematics, Humanities and Biological Sciences) were superiors to those obtained by the competitors. The ones who classified in Humanities obtained the best results. The ones that entered in Biological Sciences got the worse ones. According to the analyses carried out, the authors came out the general conclusion that the lay teachers should receive specific trainings in the content of Mathematics, in order to master this content area and as a consequence to improve its teaching performance in classroom.
