DEMO, Pedro. Política social do conhecimento e educação. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 2000, vol.08, n.26, pp.05-27. ISSN 0104-4036.

One of the deepest traces of the present society is that it is a "knowledge society". That means that, more than other previous societies, it con influence its own history's direction. At the same time, in terms of social policy and as knowledge is the most decisive comparative advantage, the fight against poverty and exclusion has to consider the knowledge challenge. Differing from the welfare state, that bets too much on social assistance, knowledge society prefers education, since this is closer to emancipatory citizenship, having knowledge as its main instrument. On the other hand, we have to consider that neoliberalism values only knowledge, not education, because its interest is in competitivity, not in citizenship. It depends on the competence of educators to take care that knowledge, not only serves exclusively the market, but also assumes the education objectives, considering the necessity of fighting, more than material shortages, the political poverty or the historically produced and maintained ignorance. Knowledge social policy, if adequately managed, intends to have the poor as the central decision maker of his own destiny, based on political reconstructive learning.
