The study has as objective to examine the changing potential of popular education in the building of the participating democracy in the village of Barra do Riacho, in the context of the impact of the dependent industrial modernization on which the city of Aracruz passed and has been passing. The impacts produced social and cultural distortions as: alterations of the worldview and life style, feelings of impotence and perplexity, regressive behaviors (alcoholism, taboos breaks, prostitution, drugs, violence), religion fanaticism and lost of the cultural identity. The participating research shows that, since then, the community got a conscience and reacted revitalizing the local Congo Band, founding a community association and claiming and obtaining many public work that rescued their citizenship, their cultural identity and improved very much their life quality.
