The article shows the problem of the Institutional Evaluation and Accreditation as a base to the Quality of Distance Education in a knowledge society. It analyses the methodology of the distance education, comparing it with the conventional education, and its importance to the developed countries. It also reports the Brazilian Policy of Distance Education and educational programs created in this area, such as; TV Escola, PROINFO, PROFORMAÇÃO AND PAPED, analyzing their weak and strong points and recognizing the importance of the expansion of the Distance Education besides the non academic programs and post graduation courses. It ends emphasizing the importance of the Institutional Evaluation and accreditation to the improvement of the offered services to the society as a whole and, mainly, as a support to the growth and improvement of the quality of the Distance Education in Brazil.
