The purpose of this article is twofold. First is to define the main characteristics of the qualitative research in the field of the educational research in comparison to the quantitative research originated in the positivistic paradigm. Second is how it can, by means of its results, be used as a reference to guide the decision processes of the educational administrators. The article also explores how researchers that use this approach are studying the educational phenomena in its natural setting, trying to make sense or to interpret them in terms of the meaning that people give to them.
