SCHWARTZMAN, Jacques  y  SCHWARTZMAN, Simón. O ensino superior privado como setor econômico. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 2002, vol.10, n.37, pp.411-440. ISSN 0104-4036.

This paper presents a broad view of the private higher education sector in Brazil, based on data of the 2000 Brazilian Census of Higher Education and other sources. Private education enrolls 2/3 of the students of that level in 946 institutions, mobilizing 10 billions of reais annualy, and employing 200 thousand persons among teachers and other workers. It will be shown that private institutions constitute a very differentiated group, with few large institutions and many small ones. Half of the students attend courses in the so-called " social professions ", which include law, business, economics and the social sciences. The second most important area is education and the third is health. Private sector is growing very fast and should be growing much faster, given the small size of the higher education sector in Brazil and the sluggish pace of the pubic sector. The system however, faces financing, efficiency and equity problems that may hinder that expansion. Finally, there is a discussion of some of the entrepreneurial strategies that may be adopted by the private sector, the efforts of the federal government to regulate it, and the identification of issues that would require field research to be better understood.
