Abstract

This text analyses through the perspective of the philosophy of education, the dialectic tension between multiculturalism and universalism, including interculturalism and its present trends. This paper, which is mainly based on Jürgen Habermas and Gilbert Durand works on ethical relativism related to contextual and transcultural values also, examines American, European and Brazilian authors related to this field. Furthermore, it inquires about the multiculturalism implications related to the neo-liberalism and the globalization processes, analyzing the underlying relations of power of these movements and its influence on educational policies of many countries. Lastly, it presents a proposal of "communicative action" as one of the solutions for the current world crisis.
