NISKIER, Arnaldo. A morada da língua portuguesa. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 2014, vol.22, n.85, pp.1115-1130. ISSN 0104-4036.

We have very strong Latin roots, and yet, it was not enough for the Orthographic Agreement Unification of the Portuguese Language, signed in 1990, to reach desirable unanimously. In Lisbon, there is a synchronized act in order to question the lexicographical reasons of the small changes proposed. The writer Lygia Fagundes Telles, while speaking at the Brazilian Academy of Letters, asked us to lead a favorable crusade for Portuguese language. We must improve the current index reading (2.4 books per capita), and expand significantly the number of public libraries across the country. The Law of Directives and Bases for National Education, from 1996, is quite sober concerning the attention given to our language. There is no use in teaching neither how to read, nor how to write, without the guarantee of students' permanence in school, place for "critical reading" and interpretation of that which comes through image and sound. We have positive information, which is the publication in some of the largest Brazilian newspapers, in columns that value Portuguese language. This is an extremely healthy movement. We must pay attention to the introjection of terms related to our scientific and technological development. It is a significant growth. The Brazilian Academy of Letters and the Machado de Assis House accomplish what is in Article 1 of its Statute: to ensure the integrity of the Portuguese language. For this, there are Spelling and Vocabulary (600,000 entries) and the school Dictionary of the Portuguese Language, both active works of the Lexicographical Commission, which is led by the respectable figure of the philologist and grammarian Evanildo Bechara. There are measures to deal with the excessiveness of foreign words, and also, to avoid what the critic Wilson Martins, properly, called "linguistic denationalization".
